Untapped export potential estimated at over TND 10 billion (CEPEX)

Untapped export potential is estimated at over TND 10 Billion in the Mechanical and Electrical Industries (MEI) sector, CEPEX said in a press release issued on Thursday following a sectoral meeting devoted to the Mechanical and Electrical Industries.

The meeting, which was attended by professionals and operators from the sector and representatives of the supervisory authority, highlighted the main difficulties facing these industries.

These problems include "bank remittances from abroad, the application of legal texts governing economic activity and training in specialities that meet the needs of investors in the sector."

Nevertheless, the meeting showed the sector's buoyancy, with the value of exports up by 20.8% in the first five months of 2023.

The sector's exports, which account for 43% of the country's overall exports, grew by 14.5% between 2021 and 2022, to TND 24.5 billion.

CEPEX pointed out that the sector's companies exported to 150 markets in 2022, including notably France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Libya, the United Kingdom and Algeria.

The meeting's recommendations focused on improving export infrastructure and logistics, international transport services and the management of export measures.

The meeting also recommended "encouraging Tunisian investment abroad by identifying appropriate legislative frameworks and stepping up prospecting operations and professional meetings in Tunisia and abroad."
