The number of new cases of cervical cancer in 2023 in Tunisia has reached 300 cases, reads a statement, Thursday, by the Directorate of Primary Healthcare (French: DSSB) on the World Cancer Day, which corresponds to February 4 of each year. The DSSB indicated said that cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. The Directorate of Basic Healthcare said that cervical cancer is one of the causes of death of women at an early age, adding that scientific studies showed that many years ago that the "human papillomavirus " (human papillomavirus) (HPV) is responsible for the development of most cases of cervical cancer. Public awareness and access to information and services are essential in the fight against the disease, said the DSSB, which specified that prevention methods include the establishment of a healthy sexual culture from the outset while emphasizing the importance of early screening to detect the disease at the pre-cancerous stage, when cure is possible. On the occasion of World Canc er Day, the Ministry of Health will organise a medical congress to announce the national strategy to combat cervical cancer on February 6, 2024, in addition to organizing awareness campaigns in basic healthcare centers and media campaigns to this effect.
