Tunisia-Libya: full re-opening of Ras Jedir border crossing [Upd 1]

Tunis: Minister of the Interior, Khaled Nouri, and his Libyan counterpart, Imed Mustapha Trabelsi, announced on Monday at the Ras Jedir border crossing (Medenine Governorate) the full reopening of the border crossing between Tunisia and Libya in both directions for the movement of people and goods. During the official announcement of the resumption of activities at the border crossing, Khaled Nouri, said that «this reopening would strengthen the good cooperation relations between Tunisia and Libya at various levels and develop trade between the two parties.» Nouri reiterated the readiness of the Tunisian authorities to take the appropriate measures and decisions to facilitate the operation of the border crossing in the common interest of the two countries. He reaffirmed Tunisia's commitment to the terms of the security memorandum signed by the two ministers in Tripoli last June 12, the operation of the crossing point, compliance with road safety regulations for vehicles, the absence of additional charges i n accordance with the principle of reciprocity, and other issues such as homonyms, security presence at the crossing point and the exchange of information between the two countries' security services. The Minister recalled the strength of the historical relations between Tunisia and Libya and the common challenges facing the region at this sensitive time for both peoples. He also expressed the willingness of the Ministry of the Interior to cooperate positively on proposals aimed at further strengthening relations, in line with the desire of the leaders of the two countries to face common challenges. For his part, the Libyan Interior Minister said at a press conference held on the occasion that the border crossing would today resume its activities for travellers and goods in accordance with the legal and regulatory procedures, in line with the MoU signed between the two parties to ensure the smooth running of the work, particularly in terms of security and services. He also recalled the willingness and eff orts of both countries to open other border crossings between Tunisia and Libya, such as the "al-Assa" and "Mechehed Salah" (Tataouine) crossings, in order to further facilitate two-way traffic between the two countries. The Ras Jedir border crossing has been closed on the Libyan side last March. It was only partially reopened on June 13, following the signing of an agreement between the two countries' interior ministers on June 12. The agreement included a number of points aimed at improving and facilitating crossing conditions at this border post and organising it in accordance with the law.
