Tigray Region Expresses Commitment to Successful Implementation of Green Legacy Initiative

Addis Ababa: The Tigray Region Interim Administration is committed to bolstering community involvement to ensure the success of Ethiopia's national green legacy Initiative, Interim Chief Administrator Getachew Reda reaffirmed. Ethiopia has embarked on a massive tree-planting initiative, aiming to plant 600 million saplings nationwide in a single day. Following Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's call for citizens to participate in this mass sapling planting event, Tigray region has launched an overnight sapling planting program, which has seen widespread participation from regional leaders, government officials, and the general public. This ambitious project is being implemented across the country, with residents of Enderta district in the Tigray region actively participating. Getachew has also put his mark on the Green Legacy Initiative through attending the overnight sapling planting program at the Endarta district today. On the occasion, Getachew emphasized the collective responsibility of all citizens to pla nt and care for saplings. He highlighted that the region's green Green legacy initiative, which has garnered significant public participation, is playing a crucial role in revitalizing deprived areas. By addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development, the program aims to improve rainfall patterns and expand water bodies. The Tigray Region Interim Administration has reiterated its commitment to ongoing green development efforts, he added. He stressed the value of adopting the traditional Tigrayan practice of protecting natural forests from human and animal encroachment. "By fostering a sense of ownership within the community and encouraging responsible use of natural resources, we can achieve rapid and effective progress in their development," the Chief Administrator added. Lieutenant General Tsadkan Gebretsanae, Interim vice Chief Administrator for the Decentralization and Democratization, on his behalf underscored the substantial benefits of sapling planting. Emphasizing the importanc e of continued tree planting to ensure the success of the national green legacy initiative, he praised the people of Tigray for their proactive efforts to restore degraded areas. Deputy head of the agriculture and natural resources office in the Tigray region, Alemberhan Harifyo highlighted the significance of green development in preserving nature and ensuring a secure livelihood. He stated that in 15 districts of the region, wells have been drilled, land has been mapped, and soil fertility enhancement efforts have been implemented. Aleembarhan stated that the seedlings being replanted during this winter's green footprint development will significantly contribute to the restoration of degraded forest lands and mountains.
