Study recommends enacting law criminalising gender-based cyber-violence

A study on cyber-violence against female activists carried out by the Aswat Nissa organisation has recommended the adoption of a law criminalising gender-based cyber-violence. "Impunity is one of the causes of the resurgence of gender-based violence," sociologist Fathia Saidi said at a study day to present the results of the research Wednesday. She added that cyber-violence was not mentioned in the national cyber-security strategy (2020-2025). The study, launched in 2022 in collaboration with the organisation OXFAM, highlighted the need to legally define cyber-violence in Law No. 58 of 2017 on combating violence against women. In particular, it recommended holding several awareness-raising campaigns to prevent the dangers of cyber-violence and disseminate the culture of non-violence and human rights education, as well as the creation of a cyber-violence observatory. Women activists and journalists who have been victims of cyber-violence shared their testimonies during the study day.
