Premier Bouden chairs ministerial working session on migration [Upd 1]

A ministerial working session chaired by Prime Minister Najla Bouden on Friday in Kasbah went on examining the issue of migration, in the presence of representatives of the Tunisian Red Crescent organisation and the National Authority for Combating Human Trafficking.

The meeting reviewed the latest developments about the growing phenomenon of illegal migration from sub-Saharan Africa to Tunisia.

It also discussed the situation on the shores of governorate of Sfax, especially after several migrant bodies were recovered following the sinking of their boats at sea.

In this context, the meeting reviewed the efforts made by various security, military and health services to deal with the situation in Sfax. It appreciated, in this regard, the role of the Tunisian Red Crescent organisation in strengthening the efforts of the State to address the problem of illegal migration.

The meeting also followed up on works of drawing up a national programme to fight irregular migration, according to a comprehensive approach and within definite frameworks taking into account the economic, humanitarian and security dimensions of this phenomenon.

The spokesperson for the General Directorate of the National Guard said Friday Coast Guard units in Sfax, Kerkennah and Mahdia have recovered 210 migrant bodies from April 18 to 27, adding preliminary examinations suggest they are of people from African Sub-Saharan countries, pending forensics.
