Number of femicides quadruple between January 2018 and 30 June 2023, according to report by Ministry of Family

The number of femicides in Tunisia has quadrupled between 2018 and June 2023, rising from 6 crimes in 2018 to 23 in the first half of the current year. The preliminary report on femicide, prepared by the Ministry of the Family, Women, Children and the Elderly and published Friday states that these crimes remained stable during the COVID-19 period. The report looked at 69 murders in 19 governorates during the period from January 1, 2018 to 30 June 2023. It found that 71% of the femicides were committed by spouses. Most of the femicides studied took place at home, with a minimum of 57% in 2020 and a maximum of 93% in 2021, with a peak between 7pm and 6am in 2020. The aim of the report is to study the social and economic characteristics of female homicide victims between January 2018 and 30 June 2023, their common features and the characteristics of those who committed the crime, and the causes of feminicide according to the data and circumstances of the crimes. The report concludes that there is a correl ation between the variables 'age' and 'marital status', as it has been found that all age groups can be targeted for murder and that the level of education does not protect victims. According to the same report, the total number of children of female victims of femicide was 64. Child protection officers automatically took charge of them, whether they were witnesses or victims. The Ministry for the Family prepared this first descriptive report on feminicide using a participatory approach with the various central and regional government structures. To obtain the data for the report, the regional delegations for women and families used a questionnaire to collect data from various sources, including the victims' families, the security and judicial services and child protection officers, on the victim, the perpetrator and the details and scientific, economic and social characteristics of the crime.
