Nearly 20,000 abortions reported in 2023 (ONFP)

Nearly 20,000 abortions had been reported in public health facilities in Tunisia in 2023, psychologist and director of the National Office of Family and Population (ONFP) Mohsen Hassen said on Wednesday. This figure had risen compared to the previous year, he told TAP on the sidelines of a national conference organised in Tunis on the migrant family, considering that this would be due to several factors, including late marriage, sexual relations outside marriage and immigration. Tunisia is one of the first Arab countries to have recognised the right to abortion for women, whether married or single, by virtue of Decree-Law No. 73-2 of September 26, 1973, amending Article 214 of the Penal Code.
