Minister of Agriculture meets EU Commission delegation

A delegation of the European Union Commission, during a working session held on Thursday in Tunis with minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Abdelmonem Belati, expressed the EU's readiness to continue supporting joint cooperation with Tunisia by providing the necessary technical support to achieve the goals set in the water sector. Belati agreed with the EU delegation headed by EU ambassador, Marcus Cornaro, and Belgian Ambassador, Francois Dimon, to schedule a working meeting between the two parties during the coming week to develop a roadmap in order to activate the planned projects and implement them in the best possible time, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture. During this session dedicated to studying the common regional challenges related to climate change and its implications for food security, the representatives of the EU Commission appreciated the level of cooperation between the two sides in several sectors such as fishing, biological agriculture and ecot ourism. They praised the research experience in the field of water treatment at the Higher Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Chott Meriem. The minister stressed that the effects of climate change will worsen in the horizon 2040 according to scientific studies due to carbon emissions from industrialized countries. He called on the EU Commission to strengthen the partnership between the two sides to serve the interests of all at several levels. Belati highlighted that climate changes have negatively affected Tunisia, especially in terms of reduced precipitation and food security. He pointed out that the ministry has developed strategies and directions in the short and medium term to support the water sector and its governance in order to meet the increasing demand for drinking water and irrigation in light of water scarcity.
