Government Intensifying Humanitarian Support to Landslides Victims of Gofa: GCS

Addis Ababa: The Government Communication Service (GCS) underscored today that the government of Ethiopia is intensifying humanitarian aid to landslide victims in Gofa zone of southern Ethiopia region. Briefing journalists, Government Communication Service State Minister Selamawit Kasa said government's support to the victims will continue in a strengthened manner. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and First Lady Zinash Tayachew as well as other high-level government officials paid today their respects in person to the families and community of victims of the Gofa Zone landslides which claimed the lives of a confirmed 231 people so far. Hundreds of people have been displaced due to the terrible incident she said, indicating that efforts are being made to take swift action to relocate over 6,000 citizens from areas of risk through pertinent institutions. Noting that the government has established a national task force, the state minister pointed out that it is providing humanitarian support to the victims. So far about 60 million Birr in financial and in-kind has been contributed, it was learned. Various countries of the world are showing their solidarity to the government and people of Ethiopia following a sudden landslide, which has claimed the lives of many citizens, she revealed. For instance, Selamawit pointed out that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has provided 85 tons of humanitarian aid to the landslide victims in Gofa zone of southern Ethiopia today.
