Food trade deficit narrows to TND 768 million in late September 2023

The food trade balance deficit narrowed to TND 768 million in late September 2023 from TND 1,950.2 million in the same period in 2022, according to data released Thursday by the National Agriculture Observatory (ONAGRI). The coverage rate was up to 86.7%, compared with 68% at the end of September 2023. Food exports rose by 20.5%, while imports fell by 5.5%. This narrowing of the deficit, according to the observatory, is due to the 55.7% increase in olive oil exports, against a fall by 13.7% in the rate of imports of grain and 29.2% in the rate of imports of vegetable oils, despite the 109% rise in imports of sugar and 63.7% in imports of milk and by-products.
