FM holds meeting with francophone Ambassadors, reiterates stance with Palestinian cause

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad Nabil Ammar held a meeting on Thursday with a number of Ambassadors from French-speaking countries accredited in Tunisia, led by the Canadian Ambassador, who currently presides over the Francophone Group in Tunis. In his address to the Ambassadors, Minister Ammar conveyed several messages, urging them to relay these messages to their respective capitals, according to a Ministry press release. The Minister reiterated Tunisia's unwavering principled stance in support of the «just Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to reclaim their occupied territories.» This comes at a time when there has been an alarming escalation of brutal and systematic aggression against the unarmed Palestinian population, resulting in the unjustifiable, dishonourable, and immoral loss of thousands of civilian lives. All of this has unfolded in the reprehensible silence of the international community, including the International Organisation of Francophonie. The Minister called upon the international community to bear its historical responsibilities and promptly put an end to the blatant aggression against the Palestinian people. He emphasised the need to address the current situation with a fresh approach, tackling the root causes of the Palestinian issue rather than merely addressing its consequences, such as humanitarian aid. The Minister warned that «the ongoing aggression over the past 75 years, marked by brutality, has fuelled hotbeds of violence, counter-violence, and extremism among new generations, posing an ever-increasing threat to regional and international security and peace on both fronts.» Minister Ammar explained that the Palestinian question fundamentally stems from colonialism, racism, and the biased stance of international actors and United Nations institutions, particularly the Security Council, in favour of the more powerful party, disregarding the historical rights and enduring suffering of the Palestinian people. The FM also provided an overview of the key outcomes from the 18th Francophonie Summit, held on November 19 and 20, 2022, on the island of Djerba. He also discussed the major preparatory steps for the 44th session of the Ministerial Conference of Francophonie, scheduled to take place in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé, on November 4 and 5, 2023, under the presidency of Minister Nabil Ammar. The Ambassadors, for their part, welcomed the initiative of this meeting, highlighting the importance of continuing the dialogue and the exchange of viewpoints, and pledged to convey the Minister's messages to their respective capitals.
