Ethiopia: Ethiopia is actively transitioning its statistical service to a digital system, Minister of Planning and Development announced. In her opening speech at the 9th African Statistics Forum, Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Planning and Development, announced Ethiopia has been working to build firm statistical system in the continent citing the ongoing nationwide transformation of its statistical service to a digital system. 'This move is part of the country's broader efforts to strengthen its statistical capacity and contribute to Africa's development,' Fitsum added. According to Ethiopian News Agency, by digitizing its statistical system, Ethiopia aims to improve data quality, enhance accessibility, and leverage innovative technologies to strengthen information sources. Through the National Statistics Development Program, Ethiopia is implementing initiatives focused on data-based policy formulation and ensuring sustainable development by expanding the information environment, the minister stated. The gove rnment, in collaboration with both domestic and international institutions, has been implementing advanced technologies like digital geo-spatial systems and mobile data collection systems which has been helping the nation to build a national statistical system that is not only up-to-date but also responsive in complex situations, the minister underscored. She also emphasized the critical role of strong statistical systems in achieving Africa's development goals and called for increased investment in statistical institutions, including qualified professionals, adequate funding, and advanced technology. Africa can improve its ability to collect, analyze, and utilize data effectively by strengthening continental, regional, and national statistical systems, which will ultimately lead to better-informed decision-making and improved governance.
