Epidemiological situation in Tunisia stable, no reports of new COVID-19 strains

The epidemiological situation in Tunisia is stable, said Director General of the National Pharmacovigilance Centre and member of the Scientific Committee to Combat the Coronavirus Riadh Daghfous. There are no reports of the emergence of a new COVID-19 strain, he further told TAP on Wednesday. The H13N2 influenza virus had been detected; it is not different from common flu viruses, Daghfous said. One infection had been logged three weeks ago. The virus had been previously found in Tunisia without presenting a real threat. Other viruses, such as SARS COV and bronchiolitis, had been reported in the country but had not spread and pose no threat. Progress had been made in the flu vaccination campaign, Daghfous said. Over 24,000 people registered on EVAX platform had been vaccinated. With about 20 vaccinations/week, the vaccination rate against the new COVID strain is poor, the official added. The low demand for vaccination is the result of climate change and higher temperatures. There is need to forge ahead with the vaccination campaign against influenza and the COVID-19, particularly for senior citizens and people with chronic conditions. The number of COVID-19 positive cases had dropped drastically and there had been no reports of new variants, Daghfous said, but Tunisians need to comply with preventive measures and get vaccinated.
