Prof. Sheriff Ibrahim, Director of Contemporary Africa-China Research in Nigeria, has called for leveraging China-Nigeria media cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. Ibrahim, who is also the Head of Department, Political Science and International Relations, University of Abuja, stated this during a news conference organised by the Chinese Embassy on Friday in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the news conference was held to discuss the outcomes of President Bola Tinubu's recent State visit to China and his participation in the 2024 FOCAC. Ibrahim underscored the increasing importance of bilateral relations in areas like trade, technology, and cultural exchange, saying the media's role in fostering sustainable relations and achieving desired outcomes was crucial. The don noted that China had become Nigeria's largest trading partner, with investments spanning various sectors, including infrastructure, telecommunications, and agriculture. He, however, ca utioned that without effective communication and understanding, misunderstandings could undermine these relations. 'Media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and facilitating dialogue. 'By fostering a cooperative media environment, both nations can enhance mutual understanding, dispel myths, and promote collaborative efforts toward sustainable development,' he said. Ibrahim proposed several initiatives aimed at strengthening the media ties between China and Nigeria, including joint training programmes for journalists, and collaborative reporting projects on key issues affecting both countries. He added that it was also necessary to establish an annual media summit to address challenges and opportunities in their bilateral relationships. The don also urged government and media organisations in both countries to prioritise transparency and responsible reporting. Amb. Yu Dunhai, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, also acknowledged the significant role that the media plays in bridging cultural differences and fostering a more profound understanding between the two countries. He said that because China understood the importance of media cooperation, it had been involved in a lot of media exchange training to strengthen capacity building, and promote win-win cooperation between China and Nigeria. 'Our media will continue to work hand in hand to highlight the success stories of our collaboration and to address any concerns that may arise,' Yu said. NAN reports that there is an MoU between China's official Xinhua News Agency and NAN for news exchanges between the two continental media giants to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
