Dodoma: Tanzania’s civil society organizations are urging the government to enhance efforts against child marriage and sexual and gender-based violence to ensure safe and equitable environments for girls, safeguarding their educational rights. This call to action was made by Koshuma Mtengeti, Executive Director of the Children’s Dignity Forum (CDF), during a meeting with over 45 stakeholders aimed at legal and policy reform advocacy. Organized by CDF and the Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA), the meeting focused on amending the Law of Marriage Act and addressing school-related violence.

According to Nam News Network, Mtengeti emphasized the importance of breaking cycles of abuse and highlighted the detrimental impact of child marriage and sexual violence on community development and children's futures. He pointed out the challenges in implementing the re-entry policy for girls returning to school, including lack of facilities, unprepared teachers, and community resistance. Despite some successes, many girls face bullying and discrimination, leading to high dropout rates.

Rose Elisante from HakiElimu also urged community support for returning girls to combat discrimination and promote educational progress. The appeal underscores the need for strict laws and community empowerment to prevent child marriages and support girls' education.
