Djerba celebrates inscription on UNESCO World Heritage List

An art performance was given on Saturday evening in Houmt Essouk, Djerba, to celebrate the island's inscription on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage List. The event, organised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, is one in a string of events, including one at the City of Culture. Minister Hayet Ketat Guermazi said Tunisia is considering the inclusion of more properties on the Tentative List. The national heritage, mainly Djerba's, came under spotlight at this art performance with choreographed scenes and remakes of old songs. Cherif Aloui, native of Djerba, was the guest of honour at this event which saw the participation of other artists, including Raouf Maher, Sta Jomaa band, Mahfouth Tanich, Zobeida Ben Mahmoud and Ghbonten popular band. Djerba, a serial property, was recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the 9th Tunisian site on the list. The nomination file was approved by the World Heritage Committee at its extended 45th session (Saudi Arabia, September 10-25). Tunisia boasts seven more sites on the World Heritage llist, namely the Médina of Tunis, Carthage and the Amphitheatre of El Jem (1979), Kerkouane (1986), the Médina of Sousse and the Médina of Kairouan (1988) and the Site of Dougga (1997). Ichkeul national park, a large freshwater lake, has been featuring on the list since 1980.
