Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Tuesday, had a working session with the executive office of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), led by the president of the employers' organization, Samir Majoul, on the problems of the industrial sector. In a statement issued by the Ministry of the Industry, the two parties discussed the need for industrial companies to join the European Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) before its entry into force in 2025. This mechanism seeks to turn Europe's industrial imports green, by making them pay for the carbon emissions linked to their production. Thus, exporting companies which do not join this mechanism will have to pay a carbon tax as of 2026. During this meeting held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry, the two parties insisted on the importance of accelerating the signature of memorandums of understanding between the public and private sectors, particularly in the agri-food and pharmaceutical industr ies. Emphasis was also placed on the need to attract new export markets in promising sectors including packaged olive oil as well as recover industrial waste and use it as raw materials. The two parties agreed to schedule regular sectoral meetings during the next period so as to achieve common goals related to the strategic orientations of the industrial sector.
