The most salient international issues and the various global crises and their repercussions, notably on developing countries, were discussed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mmigration and Tunisians Abroad Nabil Ammar at a meeting in New York with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, according to a Foreign Ministry press release on Saturday.
The two sides agreed at the meeting, held in conjunction with the high-level segment of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, on the need to develop new approaches based on radical treatment, solidarity and justice to meet the various challenges ahead, notably in achieving the goals of sustainable development.
Ammar reiterated Tunisia's commitment to the United Nations Charter and its deep belief in its principles, as well as its support for the Secretary-General's initiatives and proposals as part of the "shared plan" to tackle emerging challenges, notably his call to reform the international financial structure in line with the fundamental changes the world has seen, and to give developing countries access to concessional financing to help eradicate poverty and deal with the impacts of climate change.
He underlined Tunisia's willingness to step up cooperation with the United Nations and contribute to achieving these objectives and reinforcing international peace and security.
Guterres for his part, reiterated his support for Tunisia and his aspiration to further boost cooperation with it, recalling its positions and commending its effective contributions to addressing the challenges and issues on the United Nations agenda.
He recalled in this regard, the outpouring of solidarity shown by Tunisia towards refugees when the crisis had broken out in Libya in 2011.
