Active mobility, an event to promote cycling in Mahdia

The Mahdia Corniche hosted the "Active Mobility" event on Sunday, organised as part of the "Moving differently for better living in the city" project. The event included bike rides and sessions to learn how to ride a bike, as well as a workshop for children to learn how to maintain and repair bicycles. Residents, accompanied by their children, took part in group games organised to promote car-free mobility. Yasmine Falfoul, head of communications at the European Association for Local Democracy, told TAP the project is 95% funded by the European Union with pound 2.942 million (around 10.00 million dinars). The project, which is being carried out in three towns in France - Mahdia, Kairouan and Strasbourg - also includes activities to raise awareness among citizens of the need to adopt behaviours that promote a better quality of life, such as walking and cycling, with the aim of preserving the environment. The Municipality of Mahdia is taking part in a major part of the project and on October 20 began work on two pedestrian routes in the old town. The work, which will cost around 618,000 dinars, will take four months to complete and will contribute to the implementation of the active mobility plan in the city of Mahdia.
