Abdellatif Mekki to run for presidential elections

Tunis: The opposition party, «Amal w injaz» (Work and Achievement) announced, Wednesday, that it intends to propose the candidacy of its secretary general, Abdelatif Mekki, for the next presidential election , scheduled at the end of 2024, according to constitutional deadlines. During a press conference Abdelatif Mekki, however, stressed that this candidacy can be withdrawn «if the necessary conditions for the elections are not met.» «If the presidential elections take place under democratic conditions, they will constitute a way out for the country in the face of the current crisis,» he said. Mekki noted that this candidacy is «a form of pressure with a view to announcing a definite date for the presidential elections». The Elections Authority has not yet revealed the timetable for the next presidential elections. It affirmed that the date of the elections will be known under the presidential decree convening voters. According to the Constitution, the presidential election is held in the last three mon ths of the presidential term. The «Amal w injaz» party was established in June 2022. Its first conference took place in February 2024. Abdelatif Mekki was one of the leaders of the Ennahdha party before resigning in September 2021. He had served as Minister of Health under the troika government (2011-2014) and the government of Elyes Fakhfakh, who took office on February 28, 2020 before being dismissed on July 15,2020 . Several of the political figures and activists said that they will run for the next presidential elections including Abir Moussi, Issam Chebbi, Olfa Hamdi, Lotfi Mraihi, Mondher Zenaidi, Nizar Chaari and Safi Saïd.
